I have a cousin who is a fanatical comic book collector. However, I can
sometimes find him a bit annoying. You see, I can often see him
surrounded by comics stacked floor to ceiling in his apartment. Since
he was a child, his sole passion seems to be collecting comics and
other forms of comic art.
Of course, I can appreciate the arts, literature, and nearly anything with a good story or a striking picture to it. However, I think that it’s pretty sad to base your life around something like comic book collecting. I just don’t like fan culture. I don’t want my cousin to be a person whose self esteem revolves around knowing everything about a particular genre that he is really into.
Honestly, some of the comic art I saw are just completely gorgeous. These days, there are many talented comic artists and comic book writers in the comic book industry. I felt like I was stumbling into an art renaissance when I was exposed to it for the first time. However, I always consider the collector mentality as dull and awful, even if it involves something as fun and well done as really good comic art.
Collecting is a way of taking all of the fun and magic out of something that you love. Your hobby becomes an exercise in cataloging dead things instead of a fun and exciting activity. In my opinion, it is an awful thing for anyone to do to the comic art that they love.
I like comic art and comic books because they are just so accessible to anyone who wants to look at them. Children can appreciate comic art from a very young age, but very little of that will fade away with age. Many comic books fans continue to really love comic art well into their adult lives. However, I think that it’s a shame that so many people ruin a fun hobby with fanaticism. It is an awful thing for anyone to do, whether it is comic art, literature, music, or any other hobby.
